Practicing Evidence Based Respiratory Care to Establish the Value of Respiratory Therapists

The days of obtaining reimbursement for every procedure, test, and intervention are only distant memories. Counting ‘procedures’ and ‘billable units of service’ are no longer of any value to administrators, consultants, medical staff, and the public we serve.

This presentation will address the changing health care system, with attention to the current and forecasted demands on health care professionals and professional opportunities within the evolving health care system. I will review several instances from the peer-reviewed literature and anecdotal evidence that Respiratory Therapists add value in terms of quality, cost, and service.

To accommodate these demands placed upon us, and, more importantly, to proactively respond to these demands, the presentation will address the knowledge, skills, and competencies that are absolutely necessary to maintain our roles as valued health care providers. This presentation will also provide recommendations regarding projecting a professional image, marketing our profession, and communicating measurable outcomes resulting from our patient care activities in a variety of new care venues and new roles for RTs.

Successful completion of this course requires a score of 70% on the post-test.
