Interprofessional Education: Creating a Culture of Collaboration

1:00 p.m.–1:10 p.m.
Intro
Safe, quality and patient-centered healthcare requires the collaborative effort of numerous healthcare professionals. Yet evidence suggests that this ideal is not met consistently in day-to-day practice. Research demonstrates that purposefully integrating training programs for interprofessional education (IPE) to encourage/prepare for interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) may produce better patterns of communication and collaboration among healthcare team members, and improved quality and safety in patient care. This master course will focus on the development of IPE and IPCP experiences across the educational/learning continuum. The respect, retention and recognition that we discuss so often as challenges for our profession can be directly addressed through IPE/IPCP experiences in the academic and clinical settings.

1:10 p.m.–1:50 p.m.
Developing the Interprofessional Education Experience
This presentation will introduce pedagogical modalities for IPE such as case studies, skills labs, role playing, didactics, observation/shadowing, problem-based learning, blended learning, patient simulations and clinical practice. The session will discuss various assessment measures used to evaluate IPE. Participants will leave with an action plan to implement at their institutions at the end of this presentation.

1:55 p.m.–2:35 p.m.
Setting Objectives for the Interprofessional Education Experience
This presentation will address resources available to serve as a starting point for developing the objectives and framework for an IPE experience. The workshop will discuss utilizing the Interprofessional Professional Education Collaboration Competencies of teams/teamwork, roles/responsibilities, ethics/values and communication as objectives. The participants will develop objectives for their action plan during this session.

2:40 p.m.–3:20 p.m.
Development of an Evidence-Based Interprofessional Simulation Program
This presentation will provide attendees with an overview of how to develop an evidence-based interprofessional simulation program in both the educational and clinical settings. The speaker will discuss the core competencies for interprofessional education (IPE) as well as a case study describing the conception, initiation, and evolution of a university-based interprofessional simulation program. Attendees will also receive information regarding current centers for IPE activities including locations, programs, and shared repositories.

This presentation highlights challenges to implementing IPE in online courses and offers strategies on leveraging available technologies to give online learners experiential IPE learning opportunities to enhance communication and collaboration across different health disciplines.

4:20 p.m.–5:00 p.m.
Interprofessional Education: Teaching the Teacher
This panel discussion will discuss the lessons learned from the develop.m.ent of IPE experiences including implementation, challenges, as well as the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of IPE experiences.
