In recent years, it has become increasingly appreciated that less aggressive therapy might lead to better outcomes. Noninvasive respiratory support has been shown to improve outcomes in appropriately selected patients. Lower tidal volumes lead to better outcomes during invasive or noninvasive ventilation. Although hypoxia leads to poor outcomes, hyperoxemia also leads to poor outcomes. Ventilator liberation potential is best identified with a spontaneous breathing trial rather than gradual reductions in ventilator support. Lecturer: Dean Hess PhD, RRT, FAARC.
