The pressure is on to operate a respiratory care department more economically. And there are only so many ways you can accomplish cost savings. One of the most significant is the use of protocols by respiratory therapists. Protocols have been documented as an established method to reduce expenses. In fact, the Respiratory Care Department at the University of California San Diego, a noted proponent of protocols, used the protocols in "Respiratory Care Patient-Driven Protocols" to defer nearly $5.2 million in costs from 1993 to 1998 - with no adverse effect in clinical outcomes. This manual is an excellent resource for the development, implementation, or refinement of care plans. The CD contains a PDF file containing algorithms with each protocol.
