Adult Critical Care: Specialty Section - August 2026


This presentation explores the evolving role of the Clinical Respiratory Specialist through the lens of a new graduate respiratory therapist's third day of orientation. What begins as a planned review of bronchial hygiene, tracheostomy care, mechanical ventilation protocols, policy review, and competency validation quickly evolves into multiple real-world clinical consultations involving advanced ventilator management, airway assessment, tracheostomy planning, ventilator liberation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Using case-based examples, participants will explore how Clinical Respiratory Specialists maintain advanced bedside expertise while balancing education, onboarding, clinical consultation, quality improvement, protocol implementation, and leadership responsibilities. Through these real-world experiences, attendees will gain insight into how specialists extend the impact of respiratory care beyond individual patient encounters by supporting clinicians, advancing practice, and promoting safe, evidence-based care across the healthcare continuum. The session will also explore emerging opportunities for professional growth, advanced education, and clinical leadership within respiratory care, encouraging participants to consider future pathways for advancing the profession

Speaker Information

Danielle Hardy is a Clinical Respiratory Specialist at ECU Health Medical Center, a Level I Trauma Center and academic medical center in Greenville, North Carolina, serving as the flagship hospital of ECU Health, a nine-hospital health system in eastern North Carolina. In her role, she provides advanced clinical consultation for complex respiratory patients while leading onboarding, competency validation, continuing education, quality improvement initiatives, and protocol implementation across the health system.
Danielle serves as a clinical resource for respiratory therapists, nursing staff, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams, with a focus on adult critical care, mechanical ventilation, artificial airway management, ventilator liberation, and evidence-based respiratory practice. She is actively involved in professional development and mentorship, helping respiratory therapists advance their clinical knowledge, critical care expertise, and leadership skills.
An ECU Health Aspiring Allied Health Leader Program graduate, Danielle is the creator of an internal system-wide respiratory care microlearning and communication initiative and is actively engaged in respiratory care education, protocol development, research dissemination, and practice improvement initiatives. She is passionate about advancing respiratory care through leadership, education, mentorship, and evidence-based practice.
