October 2026 JournalCast: "Development and Validation of the Respiratory Secretion Scale (RESES) in Mechanically Ventilated Patients"

In this JournalCast, the Editor’s Choice paper from the October 2026 issue of RESPIRATORY CARE will be presented.

In this article, Maria Madden, MS, RRT, RRT-ACCS, FAARC, discusses the RESPIRATORY CARE paper, Development and Validation of the Respiratory Secretion Scale (RESES) in Mechanically Ventilated Patients by Gabriela Ferrari et al.

Retained airway secretions are common in mechanically ventilated patients, yet clinicians still describe them with informal, subjective terms. This journal club reviews Ferrari et al. (Respiratory Care, 2026), who developed and validated the Respiratory Secretion Scale (RESES). RESES is a tool that classifies tracheal secretions into 7 types and 3 amounts. We will review how the scale was built, its inter-rater reliability and its associations with clinical outcomes. We will also discuss the study’s strengths and limitations and whether RESES is ready for bedside use.
